Where

to Get That Jawn

We’re so excited to have you back in our sweet city. Taking care of human needs like food and allergy medicine and souvenirs can be tough during a dance weekend, so we’ve put together the below list of some neighborhood highlights, all within comfy walking distance from the venues.

The below spots are my personal highlights, but there are even more options in the area. Take a look at the google map here–separated into outdoor seating, indoor seating, and grab and go–for a more thorough tour: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1J_elDTYiIF9DAed8Sf2QqYUppIYs48A&usp=sharing

Have a blast this weekend, and don’t be afraid to ask the folks at the front desk if you’re looking for something specific!

2nd St. above Spring Garden (and the surrounding blocks)

Soy Cafe

630 N 2nd St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday 9AM-9PM, Saturday 11AM-9PM, Sunday 11AM-6PM

Outdoor seating?: Yes

Why you gotta get that jawn: Coffee shop serving all-day breakfast. As the name suggests, this spot is also brimming with vegan and vegetarian goodies.

The Kettle Black

631 N 2nd St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday 7AM-2PM, Saturday/Sunday 8AM-2PM

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: Home of The Breadjawn (the head baker’s uber Philly insta handle), this French-style boulangerie and coffee shop serves naturally leavened breads, bagels, and an array of tasty pastries. Also feat. toffuti and vegan lox, this spot is worth waiting in line before classes start.

Bourbon and Branch

705 N 2nd St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday 11AM-2AM, Saturday/Sunday 10AM-2AM

Outdoor seating?: Yes

Why you gotta get that jawn: Full disclosure, a certain VIP coordinator is also a regular-turned-employee-turned-regular-again at this jawn. You might say it’s her jam. That said, it’s also a real bar’s bar with a solid whiskey (bourbon, rye, and scotch) and beer selection. Extra bonus: the menu is friendly to vegans and meat lovers alike. Chicken and Waffles and Chick’n and Waffles get equal respect in the kitchen here.

The Standard Tap

901 N 2nd St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: 11AM-2AM (And their kitchen is open til 1AM for all hungry dancers!)

Outdoor seating?: Yes

Why you gotta get that jawn: A few blocks further up the road than the other spots on this list, Tap is worth the trek for the many taps and the locally-focused foods. The menu rotates constantly to keep up with seasonal ingredients. Also, they have a pool table.

The Foodery

837 N 2nd St,

Philadelphia PA 19123

Hours: Friday/Saturday 10AM-12AM, Sunday 11AM-10PM

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: PA’s prohibition-era liquor laws mean that beer is sometimes hard to buy. The Foodery has beer, cider, and seltzer by the bottle and the case. Just don’t try to find wine or spirits here. Gotta go to a state store for that. Thanks, Gifford Pinchot.

Penn Herb Company

601 N 2nd St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday/Saturday 10AM-6:30PM, Closed Sunday

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: This haven for the lover of herbs and other local wares is perfect if you find yourself losing your voice mid-weekend or have a friend back home who’d love some local honey as a souvenir.

Art Star

623 N 2nd St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday/Saturday 11AM-7PM, Sunday 12-6PM

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: Speaking of souvenirs, this shop is filled to the brim with work by local artists both sophisticated and silly. A must-see if you find yourself needing a Gritty t-shirt or something with the word ‘jawn’ on it (and really, who doesn’t?).

Spring Garden St. (and the surrounding blocks)

New Spring Garden Market

400 Spring Garden St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: 8:30AM-8PM every day

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: It’s the Asian grocery of your dreams AND it’s steps from our venues. What’s not to love?

The Lucky Well

990 Spring Garden St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday-Saturday 12PM-9:30 PM, Sunday 12PM-8PM

Outdoor seating?: Yes

Why you gotta get that jawn: Morgan tried this bar for the first time a few weeks ago, and immediately knew it had to go on the list. Blues on the speakers, a laudable whiskey selection, super-friendly staff, and BBQ Totchos? What’s not to love?! Some vegan and vegetarian options make this vibey joint steps away from the German Society a necessary stop.

Triple Bottom Brewing

915 Spring Garden St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday 4-10PM, Saturday 12-10PM, Sunday 12-8PM

Outdoor seating?: Yes

Why you gotta get that jawn: As their name suggests, this brand, spankin’ new brewery has three bottom lines: Beer, People, and Planet. That means not only do they make great beer, they are a fair chance business (partnered with local nonprofits Project HOME, Mural Arts, and Youth Sentencing & Reentry Project), and they work hard to manage their energy consumption.

Yards Brewery

500 Spring Garden St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday 11:30AM-11PM, Saturday 11AM-11PM, Sunday 11AM-10PM

Outdoor seating?: Yes

Why you gotta get that jawn: Located across the street from the GSP, Yards is perfectly convenient if you find yourself in need of a six-pack, yes, but the bar might make you want to stick around a little longer. Local beer! Tasty Food! Shuffleboard! What’s not to love? (Hint: it’s the bros).

Mini Mighty Grub

514 N 10th St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday 7AM-8PM, Saturday 7:30AM-2:30PM, Closed Sunday

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: All-day breakfast sammies in a grab-and-go environment, just a seven-minute walk from the German Society. Sign me up. (Note: the menu is not super vegetarian friendly. If you need your breakfast sammies without meats/eggs/cheeses, check out Soy Cafe or Kettle Black).

Silk City

435 Spring Garden St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: 10AM-2AM every day

Outdoor seating?: Yes

Why you gotta get that jawn: Half diner, half club, half cocktail bar, Silk City is three halves worth of lovely spitting distance from our venues. Vegan and meaty options alike.

Federal Donuts

701 N 7th St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: 7AM-7PM every day

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: FedNuts is something of a Philly (and Blues Muse) institution. Stop in for freshly-made, still-warm classic flavors and be sure to grab at least one of their rotating decadent special donuts, too. If donuts aren’t your thing, Korean-style fried chicken awaits the meat eaters here. Also: coffee (hooray!).

Purepecha

469 N 10th St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday 11AM-9PM, Saturday 12-9:30PM

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: FIRE Mexican food. Super tasty, great service, beloved by locals. Perfect to fill a dancer belly on an October day.

Love City Brewing

1023 Hamilton St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday 4PM-12AM, Saturday 12PM-12AM, Sunday 12-10PM

Outdoor seating?: Yes

Why you gotta get that jawn: Fun Fact: Philly is sometimes known as the City of Brewery Love and Distillery Affection. (OK, that’s not true, but dang do we like to drink). Love City is yet another hip brewery for the beer lovers among us.  This one doesn’t have food of its own, but they have a rotating food truck out back so there’s always SOMETHING delicious to try.

Target

456 N 5th St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Hours: Friday 7AM-10PM, Saturday 8AM-11PM, Sunday 8AM-10PM

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: Hey man, sometimes you just need a Target run.

CVS

401 Spring Garden St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Outdoor seating?: No

Why you gotta get that jawn: American chain pharmacies are beautiful places for those in need of allergy medicine, pantyhose, Halloween candy, or any other essentials.

Rite Aid

339 Spring Garden St,

Philadelphia, PA 19123

Why you gotta get that jawn: Same reasons as CVS, but for those who prefer Rite Aid
